DVD Empire - Item - Kung Fu Panda (Widescreen) / DVD-Video

For people interested in animation, buddhism, fun, kids, movie, morality, lessons, ...

SimonSherr`s rating:
SimonSherr wants one
While the critics (sheep) swoon over Wall-E, "Kung Fu Panda" stands out as one of the top 2 animated films of all time.

The film was FUN, fresh, entertaining, exciting, FUNNY, endearing, and to me the Buddhist lessons of the film made it one of the most morally beneficial films I have taken my children to see.

Not only that, my kids LOVED this film. 4 Months after seeing it my Daughter still runs around screaming "I Love Kung Fu" and my son is eagerly awaiting the DVD release date.

Next to "the Incredibles" this film sits in my mind as one of the most fun and entertaining animated films I have seen. The animation of Dreamworks has finally dethroned the brilliant animators at Pixar for quality of motion. The story is great, Jack Black is at his best (while not being raunchy), and the film is just as entertaining as it could be. Between Wall-E and this film, hands down with no hesitations "Kung Fu Panda" wins out (sadly it's more important with most critics to shove a political message down your throat, than make an entertaining animated feature). The messages of morality, self-confidence, trust, overcoming adversity, and showing how anyone can succeed if they just get back up when they are down... to me these lessons of Kung Fu Panda are far more important for my kids (at the age they are.. 7 and 3) than the dangers global warming and corporate greed (while still important messages).

Spider-Man - The New Animated Series (Special Edition)

For people interested in animation, spider-man, comics, action

SimonSherr`s rating:
The one and only season of the "new animated series". Created at Mainframe in Vancouver BC, home of the one minute a week for animators (for a frame of reference Pixar expects animators to deliver 5 seconds a week, the animators that come out of mainframe are some of the best I have ever worked with). Mocap talent Donovan Stinson does a spectacular job performing the web slinging hero. Donovan is the Andy Circus (Golumn) of the Vancouver animation scene and brings some real fun to the character. Voiced by Doogy Houser's Niel Patrick Harris, the acting is a step above what we are used to in a series. It really is a spectacular show. It was amazing to all of us in Vancouver when this show was killed, it was really quite good for a series.

This show really broke through with animation quality on an afternoon cartoon, with very few re-use of characters. We expected many seasons from the amazing crew at Mainframe, and sadly this is all we have.

A sure bet for any fan of Spider-Man. Sadly they were not allowed to use the most classic villains because of licensing issues with Sony, but they really pulled out some great new villains for Spider-Man to clash with and pulled from other Marvel series and the less well known Spider-Man foes. One of my 6 year old son's favorite and most worn out DVDs we own.

Shrek the Third (Widescreen Edition): DVD:

For people interested in animation, shrek, dreamworks, family

SimonSherr`s rating:
"Shrek 3" has it's moments, but it was a lot "heavier" and a bit darker than the other 2 in the series. There were some comical moments, but not nearly as many laughs as the other 2 films, and there were just too many serious moments for me to get into this one. My kids love Shrek1 and 2, but neither one of them will sit through this one, and I understand why.

In general "Shrek 3" just fell short in the areas that made the other 2 funny. First off, Eddie Murphy, who basically MADE "Shrek 2" and was a huge part of the comedy in "Shrek 1", is pretty much played down in this one, his role is reduced to one on level with the 3 little pigs. Which is a huge mistake. Antonio Banderas reprises his role as puss-in-boots, and again, doesn't have a big enough part.

The character development for Arthur is weak, Merlin is totally under-used (as Eric Idle joins fellow "Pythoner" John Cleese, and brings Merlin to life in a very comical way, I would have liked to have included him as a main-cast character).

Sad to end the series on a low note, but it just didn't "Bring the Shrek" for me.

Surf's Up (Widescreen Special Edition): DVD:

For people interested in animation, penguins, cute, funny, entertaining

SimonSherr`s rating:
like many CG cartoons (other than TMNT) this year, this one is over the head of most kids and quite boring for them. Mine asked to leave the theater (and we did), but I caught the rest of the film on an airplane and without my son saying "daddy, when is it going to Oooooverrrr?", I discovered that there are some redeeming qualities for the adult who likes animated films.

In general, the acting was good, the story was cute, and if you can get over the documentary style and occasionally annoying steady-cam thing, the rendering is quite impressive. I would say it's a solid rental, but even I (the guy who owns pretty much every animated feature) wouldn't add it to my library, simply because I can't see watching it more than once, and the kids just didn't enjoy it. It feels to me more like a straight to DVD story, with a theater polish.

Family Guy, Volume 5: DVD: Family Guy

For people interested in animation, awesome

SimonSherr`s rating:
I just can't see my favorite animated series with less than 5 stars. This show is very in-your-face, and intentionally spoofing low-brow shock humor. So in other words, you have to appreciate that they are trying to do stupid stuff. The show is over the top, and can be absolutely hilarious. If you haven't seen "Peter Vs. the FCC" go you-tube it. The entire series is worth owning.

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Vol. 3

For people interested in animation, great writing, very funny

SimonSherr`s rating:
Some of the best sound bites ever to grace our ears have been ripped from the hilarious writing, and awesome voice acting in Harvey Birdman, from "Adult Swim". This show is intentionally animated to look like the superhero cartoons of the early 80s (when Hanna Barbara threw up all over the animation industry). It's no "Family Guy" and some of the episodes miss the mark, but in general this show is very funny.
