As a new parent, I was inundated with opinions and advice on what baby stuff to buy. I think I either considered or bought every piece of baby gear out there. I'll try to cut through the fear, uncertainty and doubt (a.k.a. "FUD") and give you some practical recommendations for what you really need. Oh, and my son made it successfully to toddlerhood, so don't worry: you'll survive the first year.

When my son was an infant, we tried almost everything to soothe him to sleep: swings, slings, bouncy chairs, you name it. One technique that worked well was to bounce gently on a large excercise ball. But it wasn't the most attractive thing to have in your living room. The Bounce-A-Bye Baby, in contrast, would look nice in any nursery. It's fairly easy to inflate, and seems sturdy enough for lots of use. The only complaints I have were 1) the plastic smell when I first opened the package and 2) the ball seems to deflate after a few days. Available in 3 designs.

My son has always liked this book, but now that he knows his colors he can't get enough of it. We have to read it every night! Beautiful color pictures and simple phrases help build vocabulary (not that that's why we bought it).

If you've got friends who've just given birth to twins, here are some cute and funny onesies. One set says "1 of 2" and "2 of 2." Another says "Copy" and "Paste." Another says "baby(squared)." I just wish they were available in more sizes, which is why I'm not giving them 5 stars off the bat. Now I just need someone I know to have twins!

We got this tub as a hand-me-down, but it didn't matter, because it worked great. when my son was an infant and had gotten too big for the infant tub in the sink. Later, when he got bigger and could sit up by himself, we just flipped it around. The price is right, too.

You will change a lot of diapers during your child's first 2-3 years. A LOT. This diaper pail is easy to use, functional, and somehow magically disguises most of the smell. In fact, it's so easy to use that now that my son's a toddler, he can throw his own diaper away in this diaper pail. (Can potty training be far behind?)

Next to Ferber's book, this could truly be the Bible of sleep training--despite its sometimes confusing structure. You'll get guidance from every age, from birth onwards. Sleep training: it's the road to sanity.
