Baby Gear Enthusiast

As a new parent, I was inundated with opinions and advice on what baby stuff to buy. I think I either considered or bought every piece of baby gear out there. I'll try to cut through the fear, uncertainty and doubt (a.k.a. "FUD") and give you some practical recommendations for what you really need. Oh, and my son made it successfully to toddlerhood, so don't worry: you'll survive the first year.

If you're nursing, go for this pillow, rather than the Bobby. Its top is flat, so your baby doesn't go rolling off (you laugh, but wait until your third day of nursing every three hours). It attaches with a clasp, instead of Velcro that might wake up your precious one. I used the heck out of this product, and even bought the inflatable version for travelling. And if you've seen the movie "Knocked Up," you'll know that the pocket in the front acts as a handy TV remote holder.

Think a glider is a luxury? Think again. You'll spend many, many hours holding your baby while nursing or trying to rock her to sleep. You don't have to spring for a top of the line glider. We found a perfectly good one on Craigslist. Be sure you get padded armrests.

There's no two ways about it: if you're pumping (or "expressing") breast milk, you're going to feel a little like a dairy cow. BUT it's completely worth it when you can let your partner give your baby a bottle in the middle of the night while you get some shut eye. And if you want to keep nursing after you go back to work, you're going to need a pump. I'd recommend investing in the best you can afford--and this Medela pump has everything you need, even if it is a little heavy. You'll be more comfortable, and the more comfortable you are, the more success you'll have. (Believe me, every ounce you get will be like liquid gold.) Plus, this pump is fairly quiet, so you can shut the office door and be discreet while you pump. It looks like a regular backpack, so no one will really know what you're hauling around.
