As a new parent, I was inundated with opinions and advice on what baby stuff to buy. I think I either considered or bought every piece of baby gear out there. I'll try to cut through the fear, uncertainty and doubt (a.k.a. "FUD") and give you some practical recommendations for what you really need. Oh, and my son made it successfully to toddlerhood, so don't worry: you'll survive the first year.

So it's not exactly a "baby" product...but it's such a brilliant idea I had to Loot it. This clever clock changes color when it's "OK" for your preschooler to get out of bed. For parents dealing with 5am wakeup calls, this could be a godsend. (I also like that the product picture on the Web site feature the Twitter failwhale, but that's just me.) I'm happy to report, too, that this gadget WORKS. I told my son that he could come into our room when the light turns green...and sure enough, he now almost always waits until the light turns green (7am) before waking us up. It is a MIRACLE. The interface is a little hard to figure out, but I'm not complaining if it gets me ONE HALF HOUR MORE SLEEP.

When my son was an infant, we tried almost everything to soothe him to sleep: swings, slings, bouncy chairs, you name it. One technique that worked well was to bounce gently on a large excercise ball. But it wasn't the most attractive thing to have in your living room. The Bounce-A-Bye Baby, in contrast, would look nice in any nursery. It's fairly easy to inflate, and seems sturdy enough for lots of use. The only complaints I have were 1) the plastic smell when I first opened the package and 2) the ball seems to deflate after a few days. Available in 3 designs.

Next to Ferber's book, this could truly be the Bible of sleep training--despite its sometimes confusing structure. You'll get guidance from every age, from birth onwards. Sleep training: it's the road to sanity.

I wish I'd known about this catalog, and these blankets, when I had my son. As a parent-writer (or is it writer-parent), I like that these are unique, literate, and not your usual cutesy baby pattern. The only thing keeping me from giving these 5 stars is that I haven't seen one in person.

Think a glider is a luxury? Think again. You'll spend many, many hours holding your baby while nursing or trying to rock her to sleep. You don't have to spring for a top of the line glider. We found a perfectly good one on Craigslist. Be sure you get padded armrests.
