As a new parent, I was inundated with opinions and advice on what baby stuff to buy. I think I either considered or bought every piece of baby gear out there. I'll try to cut through the fear, uncertainty and doubt (a.k.a. "FUD") and give you some practical recommendations for what you really need. Oh, and my son made it successfully to toddlerhood, so don't worry: you'll survive the first year.

So it's not exactly a "baby" product...but it's such a brilliant idea I had to Loot it. This clever clock changes color when it's "OK" for your preschooler to get out of bed. For parents dealing with 5am wakeup calls, this could be a godsend. (I also like that the product picture on the Web site feature the Twitter failwhale, but that's just me.) I'm happy to report, too, that this gadget WORKS. I told my son that he could come into our room when the light turns green...and sure enough, he now almost always waits until the light turns green (7am) before waking us up. The only reason I didn't give this produce 5 stars is because the setup interface is a little difficult to figure out (for parents).

My son has always liked this book, but now that he knows his colors he can't get enough of it. We have to read it every night! Beautiful color pictures and simple phrases help build vocabulary (not that that's why we bought it).

When my son began fighting his high chair, we graduated him to this booster. We haven't been sorry. It's lightweight, comfortable and wipes down easily (VERY important). Worth the price.

Another classic bedtime story. This one, though, is told mostly in pictures, so you'll have to get creative and narrate it yourself. But you can have fun pointing out the hi-jinks to your kid. And watch for the balloon. It appears in each picture. My son sees something new in this story each time I read it to him.

To call this book a classic would be a gross understatement. It's the ultimate bedtime story, and you'll soon know it by heart. And that really will be OK. As your child becomes a toddler, he or she will have fun finding the little mouse in each picture.
