I'm just a hobbyist, but I have about 20 years of experience with SLRs. I'm a Canon guy. I don't know that I have ever shot a photo with a Nikon. Call me a traditionalist, but I still haven't completely converted to digital. If it weren't for the cost involved with purchasing film and having it developed, I would probably still do a lot more on film than digital. I just like the contrast and texture that film provides.
I play and referee soccer, play ultimate frisbee, snow ski, occasionally water ski, ice skate, play volleyball, fly kites, go fishing, and I'm learning to play golf. An outdoor enthusiast for as long as I can remember. Yep, I was a Boy Scout and made Eagle. I enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, biking, geocaching. Just about anything that gets me outside is ok with me.
My wife has proclaimed me "gadget guy." I can't argue that, but I do tend to be an early adopter, but a late upgrader. I'll milk my old version for all it's worth before buying the latest and greatest. In other words, some of my recommendations may not be for the latest generation.

 For people interested in electronic gadgets, gps Pros: Clear, usually accurate directions (it has made a few minor mistakes). My wife can now get places on her own, without getting lost; I no longer have to experience my wife giving directions. Cons: I now find myself being very lazy at paying attention to where I am. Updates are only by ordering a DVD and hooking up to your computer. I think there are some devices out there now that provide on-the-fly updates and even current gas prices.
